MANDATE

The Newfoundland & Labrador Employers' Council provides advocacy, communication and training for its members in matters that affect the employment relationship.

Established in 1982, as a not-for-profit organization, the Employers' Council enables employers to present a collective point of view on employment issues. Its membership includes employers and employer associations from the public and private sectors in all regions of the province.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the Newfoundland & Labrador Employers' Council are:

  • To provide a strong voice for employers and their views on public policy issues affecting labour legislation, workers' compensation, occupational health and safety, employment legislation and regulations and standards.

  • To promote networking amongst employers and encourage "employers helping employers".

  • To work with government and labour organizations to foster and promote a positive and healthy employee relations climate.

  • To actively promote and support effective employer representation on boards, commissions and tribunals.

  • To continually assess the demographic and skill shortages of the province and pursue the creation of policies and programs that will develop a trained, skilled workforce which meet the present and future needs of employers.

  • To enhance employer knowledge of employment issues and foster effective management practices.


MEMBER SERVICES

The Newfoundland & Labrador Employers' Council provides assistance to members on a number of topics, including:
  • Labour Standards

  • Labour Relations

  • Employment Law

  • Human Rights

  • Human Resource Management

  • Workers' Compensation

  • Employment Insurance

  • Occupational Health and Safety

Assistance is provided utilizing the Newfoundland & Labrador Employers' Council resource library, Internet resources, staff expertise, expertise of members and referral to appropriate professionals as required.

STRUCTURE

The Board of Directors, consisting of sectoral, regional, and -at-large directors, provides the overall leadership on the Council's direction, vision and initiatives. Directors are elected for two-year terms. Committees are formed as required for specific projects and issues.

PRINCIPLES

To be effective and provide quality services to members, the Newfoundland & Labrador Employers' Council will ACT. The Employers' Council will focus its resources around principles of Advocacy, Communication and Training.
