The NLEC's 2011 Conference "That's Not in My Job Description...And other realities of a tight labour market" was a huge success, with over 110 employers in attendance, an excellent line up of presenters, and a great new venue. Feedback from attendees rated the event as the best conference held by the NLEC in recent years.
The Conference featured sessions on the realities of today's labour market. For more details see the conference agenda.
Wade Locke, Professor of Economics at Memorial University presented on the Economic Impact of the Tight Labour Market. Locke told conference participants that Newfoundland and Labrador's average hourly wage will soon surpass the Canadian average. He also warned employers that they can to expect to see wage inflation continue to increase due to competition from Alberta and major projects in other provinces, who we will be competing with for labour.
The EOD Panel discussion "Doing More with Less" also received great interest from both participants and media. In this panel, Employer of Distinction winners Iron Ore Company of Canada (Labrador Operations) and Fit for Work, along with Path of Distinction winner Ever Green Environmental, outlined their challenges in today's tight labour market, and how they have found success "doing more with less" through the use of technology, lean management, cross training, mentoring, and more.
The panel discussion "Government's Role - The impact of social programs on the labour market" is continuing to cause a stir in the media. The conference also included a trade show focused on Accessing the Underutilized Labour Market, outlining programs that exist allowing employers to target the unemployed, students and recent grads, immigrants and foreign workers, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
